Aberdeen Scotland 🏴
Aberdeen is a city of 250,000 located on the North East coast of Scotland.
It’s a diverse city complete with some interesting history, architecture, lots of things to do, a lively shopping are and busy harbour.
For many years Aberdeen was the heart of the oil industry in Scotland and at one time house prices in Aberdeen were higher than London.
However, the oil price fall badly affected the city and now it is transitioning from oil to renewable energy industries. It also has a busy cruise ship harbour.
Aberdeen has the nickname ‘The Granite City’. It has many granite buildings which can give the city a grey feel. However, they apparently sparkle when it rains!
There are several interesting historical sites including St Machars Cathedral that dates from the 12th century, Marischal College and Duthie Park.
Aberdeen also sits along a stunning beach and lovely rugged coastline.
Also within easy reach Royal Deeside, home to the Balmoral estate.
Aberdeen is also a busy conference and events venue.
It’s a great spot for a weekend break if you want somewhere with plenty of things to do.
I’ve been for a Christmas break and a couple of short weekend breaks, combining the stay with visits to National Trust properties in the area too.
The Leonardo Hotel (formerly the Jurys Inn Aberdeen) is super handy – it’s right in the Union Street shopping centre, which is beside the railway station making a car free trip very easy.
