Azores Holiday Comparisons

Are you thinking of a taking an Azores holiday?

Do you want to compare the options from the most popular holiday companies?

Do you want inside tips and information relating to the program what’s included from someone who knows the Azores well?

Great!

You are in the exactly the right place.

I have taken 5 or 6 British groups on an Azores holiday and it is somewhere I really enjoy visiting.

If you haven’t already read it I would recommend my guide to the Azores first – this gives you a detailed overview of the main hotels, the main places visited, excursions and much more.

In this article I have looked in detail at the itineraries and programs from the biggest and most popular holiday companies to help you find the one that suits you quickly and easily.

But let’s start with a very important piece of information first;

You need to check the itineraries and information with the tour operators directly. I have used what information I can find that is publicly available – however, tour itineraries do change.

Covid19 is leading to unprecedented amounts of change throughout the travel industry, leading to even more changes that we might normally expect.

This information is designed to give you a quick and easy overview of some of the options for an Azores holiday. It is based on my views having spent 25 years as a Tour Manager, including taking trips to the Azores.

This information is designed to help you identify what questions you need to ask before making a booking, to understand more about the itinerary and how it works in practice, and to get a feel for which tour operator might suit your needs best.

So now that is all clear – let’s jump in to the exciting stuff and look at some different tour options.

(If you are new to coach holidays then you might find my 10 Things You Need to Know About Coach Holidays helpful.)

azores holiday ponta delgada harbour
Ponta Delgada Harbour and Marina

Day 1- Arrival

Ponta Delgada is where most of the flights land from Lisbon this is where you will generally arrive.

There are no flights included in this package. You can easily arrange flights yourself by flying to Lisbon from various points in the UK and then taking a flight out to Ponta Delgada.

There is a free transfer provided by Explore from the airport to the hotel.

There is also a welcome briefing.

Vila Nova Hotel

This hotel has a great location very close to the main square in Ponta Delgada, with easy access to all the attractions and public transport. Whilst not directly overlooking the sea it is located close to the sea and the harbour, providing plenty of choice of places to eat as well as promenade walks from the front door.

Hotel rooms are light and spacious, and the reviews on Booking.com are excellent for this hotel. It also has a swimming pool at the rear of the hotel.

Day 2 – Sete Cidades

Breakfast included

Included 8 kilometre easy 2.5 hour walk around the crater of Sete Cidades with a chance to visit the Visto do Rei.

The rest of the day in Ponta Delgada is at leisure.

PT Notes: The activity today will take half to 3/4 of the day depending on stops – giving you plenty of time in Ponta Delgada.

azores holiday cozido
Cozido Cooking Area

Day 3 – Nordeste

Breakfast included

Full day tour starting with a visit to the Goreanna tea factory where you will see tea being produced.

Then it’s a drive to Lagoa as Furnas to take a short walk along the edge of the lake to see the local stew being cooked in holes in the ground using geothermal heat.

After that it’s lunch and a chance to eat the local stew you saw being cooked – Cozido in a local restaurant.

After a hearty stew there is a visit to the beautiful Terra Nostra botanical gardens, where you can bathe in the warm iron rich waters of the thermal pool if you wish. There are plenty of walking trails with wonderful trees and views to enjoy.

On the return to Ponta Delgada you will stop off at Lagoa de Fogo for photos.

PT Notes: This is a mainly getting on and off the coach day today with some shorter walks. The included lunch is a really local and great option.

Day 4 – Free Day

Breakfast included

There is the opportunity to take some walks yourselves or book an optional whale watching trip.

Sao Miguel – Half day whale watching €55pp

Flores Azores Holiday
Flores

Day 5 – Fly to Flores

Breakfast included

There is a morning flight to Flores. At present there is one scheduled flights departing from Ponta Delgada to Flores in the moring. It leaves at 8.50am and arrives into Flores at 10.55am. The flight time to Flores is 1 hour and 15 minues and there is one stop en route in Horta.

The SATA inter island flights are on smaller planes so there may well be some restrictions on the size of your hand luggage because the overhead lockers are smaller. As such larger hand luggage items might need to be placed in the hold.

On arrival you check into your hotel and then take a short walk with the rest of the day being free.

PT Notes: Flores is a Unesco Biosphere reserve and as such there are restrictions on development. It is a very different type of island to Sao Miguel and Explore is the only operator in my list to include Flores.

Hotel Ocidental

This is a simple styled low level hotel with ground floor and first floor rooms. It has a swimming pool, a lovely location set close to the rocky coast, a restaurant, pool and gym.

The reviews on Tripadvisor of this hotel are quite mixed. The hotel seems to provide a basic, no frills experience with a continental type buffet breakfast included. WIFI doesn’t seem to be available in all the rooms, but mainly in the public areas.

There are a choice of restaurants within around 15 minutes walking distance of the hotel.

Flores is a small island with a population of 4,000 people.

Day 6 – Hike from Lajedo to Faja Grande

Breakfast included

There is a short transfer to the start point for a moderate 13km walk. This walk combines cliff views, waterfalls and a watermill finishing up at a bathing area.

There is some free time at the end of the walk in Faja Grande which is a small rural area before returning to the hotel.

The walking time is around 4 hours.

Day 7 – Fly to Terceira Island, Explore Angra Do Heroismo

Breakfast included

Today there is a flight from Flores to Terceira.

A direct flight takes 1 hour.

Hotel Teresinha – Praia da Vitoria

This simple low level hotel is in a good location in Praia. It is located to the rear of the town, in a greener area, with easy walking access to the town centre, the harbour and beach area.

Praia itself is located close to Terceira airport.

After checking in there is a 30 minute or so journey across the island to visit Angra do Heroismo. There is a chance to explore the city and a choice of walks including an easy 7.5km walk which is expected to take 2.5 hours.

There is an optional afternoon visit to the Agar do Carvao caves.

Algar do Cárvao Caves entrance fee €8 1 cave, €10 2 caves, transport in shared taxi €15.

PT Notes: Whilst direct flights only take an hour they are currently showing (November 2020) as flying late morning, arriving in Terceira lunch time. Flights with one stop don’t arrive until mid afternoon. With either option it is difficult to see how stopping off at the hotel, a 30 minute transfer, a chance to explore Angra, optional walk and an optional tour are possible in the one day.

PT Recommendation: Before booking ask for a bit more clarity about flight times and the itinerary for this day.

Day 8 – Walk to Baias de Agualva; Biscoitos lava pools

Breakfast included

Bus journey to Quatro Ribeiras for a walk which finished in Biscoitos (with option to take bus for the last section). The walk is 12.5km long and takes around 4 hours with 320 metres of ascent and 465 metres of descent.

There is a chance to swim in the lava rock pools. The day finishes with a late afternoon return to Praia after stopping off at the Serra Do Cume viewpoint.

The hotel also has great leisure facilities including sauna, steam room, gym, indoor and outdoor pool. There is also a bar, restaurant and coffee house in the hotel as well.

The location means you are within easy reach of all the attractions of Horta, the small town centre, the harbour, the beach and the Promenade.

Walking in the Azores

The Feefo rating by previous guests for this tour is 4.3 out of 5.

Professional Traveller View

  • This is a small group active tour, giving guests a chance to really explore the islands.
  • There is a Trip Leader and they have had good reviews, with guests mentioning their ability to adapt to the weather and personalise the program.
  • The pacing is good with plenty of time to enjoy each island.
  • This tour visits Flores and Sao Jorge – alongwith Sao Miguel, Terceira and Faial. It’s a great opportunity to visit these much less frequently visited islands, particularly with a group.
  • Whilst not many meals are included it is clear from the reviews that there are the opportunity to enjoy group meals throughout the tour, arranged by the Tour Leader.
  • It would be easy to extend this tour a day or two and use the opportunity to visit Pico Island, or do more whale watching.

Whale watching is generally speaking better in the morning when the whales are likely to be more actively hunting for food. There is also an included dinner this evening which might affect timings.

Professional Traveller Review:

  • The slightly larger potential group size means this a great way to meet a mix of people
  • The transfer to the airport and home makes flying convenient
  • There is an option book flights direct which could result in a saving, particularly if you are able to reach the airport easily as no included flights means no car service is included
  • This is a shorter trip and visits 3 islands, staying on 2
  • On Day 7 of the tour there is only a flight in the program, giving free time all day. A flight in the middle of the day makes it harder to make good use of your free time.

Professional Traveller Review;

  • This tour visits 4 of the Azores islands (visit to Pico Island is an optional tour), with stays on 3 islands
  • The pace is relaxed with plenty of time to enjoy each island and also free time to personalise your tour
  • This tour includes all the evening meals and breakfasts, leaving just lunches to buy.
  • The audio guides are great with a larger group
  • The return flight time means that you may need an extra overnight at the airport
