Best Time to Visit Invergordon

When Is the Best Time to Visit Invergordon?

The best time for better value accommodation and good weather is outside of the summer peak season. April and October are both good months to visit. In winter the weather can impact travel in the area.

Invergordon Cruise Season

Invergordon is the busiest during the cruise ship season. In 2024 this starts on the 3rd of April and the last ship is currently due to call on the 5th of October.

During this time Invergordon can be much busier with guests visiting the small town and also using the local transport.

If you are planning on visiting during cruise season then make sure you allow plenty of extra time if using public transport.

Winter

The winter months are, as you would expect in the Scottish Highlands, colder. We can have quite a lot of wet days, some very cold periods (think -10 degrees Celsius) and snow.

Given that Invergordon is right beside the Cromarty Firth it does benefit a little bit from the water in that it can be less cold than the surrounding areas.

Rain often means amazing rainbows across and around the Cromarty Firth.

There can be quite a lot of low-level cloud over the Cromarty Firth during the winter period, making it difficult for the sun to get through sometimes.

There are few visitors to the Highlands during the winter months. This can make it much cheaper in terms of accommodation prices.

Weather can have a significant impact on travel plans during this time of year. If you are planning on visiting Invergordon during these months then make allowances for this.

There can be some heavy storms during these months. It is best to avoid travelling during these periods, especially if you are unfamiliar with the roads and conditions.

Some visitor attractions and facilities close during the winter or reduce their opening hours. As such it’s best to double check before visiting.

Spring

Spring is a great time to visit Invergordon. As with everywhere else plants are coming back to life.

There have been frequent heavy snow spells during early Spring so be prepared for that if you are visiting the area.

Visitors are starting to return in Spring. That said April can offer good value hotel and accommodation deals.

May is noticeably busier.

Summer

Summer in the Highlands is just stunning and that’s why Invergordon is often at it’s busiest – particularly during June, with cruise ships.

The days are much longer with an extended twilight. This can mean that at the height of summer it barely gets dark.

Sleep masks are great for sleeping when it is still light outside.

There can still be wet and windy days so extra layers and a lightweight waterproof is always good to have too.

Invergordon Port catches the wind, particularly when a cruise ship is moored alongside the dock. The wind funnels through between the ship and the dock, which can make it feel much cooler.

It can get hot in the Highlands, with occasional days in the 30-degree range but generally, it’s a much more manageable 20-degree range.

There is a shortage of accommodation throughout the Highlands during the summer months. If you are planning on visiting Invergordon make sure you have accommodation booked in advance as places are likely to be full otherwise.

Autumn

With plenty of warm days remaining and the colours starting to change on the trees Autumn is a great time to visit Invergordon.

There can be some colder and wetter days but the weather is often good through to October time.

The evenings can still be quite light and there are some lovely sunsets and sunrises to enjoy too.

There are fewer visitors during the latter part of Autumn. That can make it easier to find accommodation and it can be much cheaper too.

There is also less traffic on the roads.

It’s also a great place to visit for photography during Autumn as the colours on the trees change.
