Cape Verde
Cape Verde are 10 volcanic islands set off the West Coast of Africa.
They have consistent year round temperatures of around 26-30 degrees.
The islands are an interesting mix of Portueguse and Creole influences.
The islands sit in the Atlantic Ocean directly west from Dakar in Senegal. Their slightly more exposed located means they can get more of the winds than the Canary Islands for example.
This can make travelling by ferry quite difficult – one of the ferries is called the ‘vomit express’ because of how choppy the journey is.
Travelling between the islands is not as structured and easy as in the Canaries. Ferry times are not necessarily fixed. While there are flight options these are a bit more limited.
Here they are in order of size from largest to smallest;
Santiago
This is the largest island and home to Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.
It’s also the hub for the transport links and has a population of 230,000 people.
There are lots of lovely sandy beaches to enjoy on Santiago.
Check out accommodation on Cape Verde below;
Sao Vicente
With a population of 67,000 Sao Vicente is described as the ‘cultural hub’ of Cape Verde.
Along with the culture there are also beautiful forests and sandy beaches to enjoy as well.

Santo Antao
This island is home to 47,000 people. It’s rugged, hilly and dramatic terrain make it popular with hillwalkers.
Fogo
This island is dominated by Pico do Fogo standing at 2829m. The landscape is volcanic too. It’s home to 37,000 people.
Sal
This is the most popular island with tourists. It’s name comes from the salt that was harvested here.
Santa Maria is the main resort. Sal has wonderful sandy beaches and a population of 15,000 people.
Maio
This island is home to 6,500 people and much less visited than the other islands, giving it an undiscovered feel.
Santa Luzia
This is the smallest island in Cape Verde and is uninhabited, but you can visit it to enjoy the stunning scenery.
You can fly direct to Cape Verde from following UK airports;
- Nottingham
- Newcastle
- Glasgow

Another option for visiting is to take a cruise from Miami – it’s also a 1 hour flight from Miami to the Bahamas. Why not combine to the two and have a longer January stay?
