Why Airport Lounges Are Great for Travellers with Additional Needs
Airports can be stressful places for travellers, whether they have additional needs or not. My family member has autism and finds airports overwhelming due to the sensory overload.
Here’s why we find airport lounges are really useful;
- ✅ Quiet spaces away from the busy terminal with all it’s noise and announcements
- ✅ Comfortable seating and relaxed layout
- ✅ Free refreshments – free food is always a great distraction!
- ✅ Flight information screens so you can see boarding and gate info easily
- ✅ Quieter toilets
- ✅ Limited capacity – lounges restrict the overall number of guests.
I’ve visited all the lounges at Birmingham airport. Whilst they are all good options for travellers with additional needs there are some differences as you will see below.

Birmingham Airport Lounges – Quick Overview
Birmingham Airport has 4 airport lounges. 3 of them are in the North terminal and one of them is in the South terminal.
- No 1 Lounge – this lounge has the best buffet selection and it is the largest lounge. The lounge feels bright, airy and comfortable. There is a range of seating including some quieter corners and a small TV lounge. There are no toilets in this lounge but they are just outside.
- Aspire Lounge – this lounge is smaller and it can feel a bit crowded around the buffet due to the rectangular shape of the lounge. There is a slightly smaller selection on the buffet. There are some seats away from the windows if this suits your needs better. There are no toilets in this lounge, they are in the adjacent corridor.
- Clubrooms – this lounge does not allow children under 12 entry. It is premium lounge with table service meals and a wider selection of drinks. Much of the seating is low chairs without arms which could be more difficult for some guests. This lounge has one toilet inside the lounge area.
All three lounges accept Priority Pass, DragonPass and LoungePair+ memberships.

- During one airport visit I checked the costs of eating in the airport. If I went to Wetherspoons and had their cheapest main meal with a beer the cost would be £15.00. Compare that to using one of my Priority Pass Standard Plus Membership included visits which works out to £20.60 for each visit.
- That means I get a much better environment for working and relaxing, with faster WIFI, unlimited hot and cold food and unlimited drinks (within safe flying limits) for only £5.60 extra. That makes Priority Pass great value.

All the lounges are wheelchair accessible. Book your assistance for Birmingham Airport and advise them at the time of booking that you would like to use an airport lounge.
Do I need to pre-book assisted travel?
Yes — you should book through your airline or tour operator in advance. You should also tell them if you intend to take your own mobility aid such as a wheelchair (including electric) or electric mobility scooter.
Is There a Quiet Space for Travellers Who Find Airports Overwhelming?
Yes. Birmingham Airport has a designated room with open access for customers if the airport environment becomes overwhelming. The room contains two 3-seater sofas, a bean bag, and a small selection of books. It is located after security, next to Gate 47 — a short 4-minute walk from the Assisted Travel Seating Area in the North Departure Lounge. This is separate from the paid lounges.
Does Birmingham Airport Use the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme?
Yes, and there’s a specific process. All customers using a Sunflower Lanyard need to first register with the Assisted Travel desk on-site before accessing security. Once registered, airport teams can discuss the level of assistance required, ensuring a consistent level of service. Note this is not a fast-track service — it’s there to ensure appropriate support is in place
Is there a Changing Places toilet at Birmingham Airport?
Yes — a dedicated Changing Places toilet is located within the Departure Lounge, behind WH Smith Bookshop. It includes a height-adjustable changing bench, a hoist system, and space for approach from either side. The access code is 2345, or can be obtained from the Assisted Travel Help Desk. No slings are provided; you must bring your own compatible with the loop system.
Are there sign language-trained staff at Birmingham Airport?
Yes — there are members of staff at Birmingham Airport who can use sign language, and they can be contacted from the Special Assistance Reception Desk.
Do the paid lounges cater for neurodiverse passengers or those with hidden disabilities?
The airport’s own quiet spaces (the Sunflower Room/calm area) are specifically designed for this. The Airside Sunflower Lounge lets customers wait before their flight in a quiet space away from the bustle of the main lounge area, and colleagues are trained to assist passengers with neuro-diverse needs. The commercial lounges (Aspire, No1, etc.) also tend to be quieter than the main departures hall, which many passengers with sensory sensitivities find beneficial
Is there Blue Badge parking close to the terminal?
Car Parks 1, 2, 3, and 5 have Blue Badge bays on the ground floor, with lift access to upper levels. The Drop Off Car Park also has Blue Badge bays, and Premium Set Down is recommended for free 30-minute access. Blue Badge holders receive 60 minutes of free parking in the Drop & Go area
Bonus: Tips for a Less Stressful Visit to Birmingham Airport
Here are a few practical tips to make your travel even smoother:
- ✅ Arrive early and allow plenty of time – rushing just adds stress
- ✅ Use a sunflower lanyard or pin (available at the airport) so staff know you have additional needs
- ✅ Use the Family Friendly Security Lane – it’s a bit easier to deal with
- ✅ Bring noise-cancelling headphones – these make the background noise disappear
- ✅ Use the airline app to be notified directly of boarding and gate details
- ✅ Have a little calm kit – chewing gum/sweets, snacks for the plane, something absorbing to watch and/or listen to, fidget tools if needed
- ✅ Check the Assisted Travel support available from Birmingham Airport directly on their website
Final Thoughts: Relax Before You Fly
Travelling is challenging and airports can be noisy and overwhelming for anyone. Using an airport lounge is a great way to upgrade the airport experience. It turns the airport experience into a bit of a treat.

- All the North Terminal paid entry lounges at Luton are suitable for travellers who need additional assitance (I haven’t visited the South Terminal lounge but it says it is accessible too).
