Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe with a population of approximately 9.7 million people. Geographically, it covers about 93,028 square kilometers (35,919 square miles).
Hungary’s landscape is predominantly flat, dominated by the Great Hungarian Plain (Alföld) in the east and the Little Hungarian Plain (Kisalföld) in the northwest, with the Danube River flowing through the country from north to south. The largest lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton, is found in western Hungary.
Key Destinations
- Budapest: The capital city, often called the “Pearl of the Danube,” features the stunning Parliament Building, Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, Chain Bridge, and numerous thermal baths including Széchenyi and Gellért.
- Lake Balaton: Hungary’s “inland sea” offers beaches, sailing, wineries in the Balaton Highlands, and charming towns like Tihany with its Benedictine Abbey.
- Eger: This baroque city is famous for its castle, thermal baths, beautiful Minorite Church, and the nearby Valley of Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy) with its wine cellars.
- Pécs: A city with 2,000 years of history featuring early Christian burial sites (UNESCO World Heritage), a magnificent cathedral, Turkish architecture, and vibrant cultural scene.
- Debrecen: Hungary’s second-largest city known for its Reformed Great Church, Déri Museum, and nearby Hortobágy National Park showcasing traditional Hungarian plains culture.
What Hungary Is Famous For?
Hungary is renowned for its thermal spa culture with approximately 1,500 thermal springs, distinctive cuisine featuring paprika-infused dishes like goulash and chicken paprikash, exceptional wines including Tokaji Aszú (the “wine of kings”), folk traditions, and classical music legacy (Liszt, Bartók, Kodály). The country also boasts a rich architectural heritage spanning Roman ruins, medieval castles, Ottoman-era buildings, and Art Nouveau masterpieces.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Hungary depends on your interests:
- Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October): These shoulder seasons offer pleasant temperatures (15-25°C/59-77°F), fewer tourists, and beautiful scenery—spring brings blossoming trees and cultural festivals, while autumn features wine harvests and colorful foliage.
- Summer (June-August): Warm and occasionally hot temperatures (25-30°C/77-86°F) with long daylight hours make this ideal for lake activities, outdoor festivals, and exploring cities. However, this is high season with more tourists and potentially higher prices.
