🧳Cabin Baggage Easyjet Rules, Cost, Sizes & Allowances

Do you want to know what cabin baggage Easyjet allows?

I’m an Easyjet geek because I travel with them a lot.

Here’s my guide which includes what you can take as cabin baggage, what the sizes are, what you can take into the cabin and what you can’t.

Don’t get caught out at the gate!

Cabin Baggage Easyjet Allowance

Let’s start with the free allowance that everyone gets included in their standard flight price.

It’s a small under seat bag or case.

Size

It must be no more than 45cm high x 36cm wide x 20cm deep, including all the handles and wheels.

Weight

There is no weight limit for this case but you must be able to carry and stow it yourself.

Cost

Included in your ticket price.

Cabin Baggage Easyjet

Easyjet Cabin Bag or Overhead Locker Bag

You can add another cabin bag to your luggage allowance.

This must be stowed in the overhead locker.

Size

The total size for this case, including all handles and wheels, must be no larger than 56cm high x 45cm wide x 25cm deep

Weight

There is a maximum limit of 15kg for this case. However, you must be able to lift this case into the overhead locker yourself.

Cost

This varies depending on the flight and demand. See more information below.

Cabin Baggage Easyjet Costs

Baggage costs vary from flight to flight rather than being a fixed fee.

Part of this is because the cost of carrying the luggage depends on the length of the flight. The longer the flight the more fuel that is needed for that flight.

The other part of the reason is that Easyjet uses dynamic pricing for its flights. That means the cost of any luggage changes as demand increases too.

This means that to get the cheapest luggage costs you need to book as early as possible.

Below are some cost comparisons so you can see the difference.

Two Different Flight Destinations

This comparison shows the costs for a flight departing on the same date but going from and to different destinations.

The Inverness to London Gatwick flight is about 1 hour and 15 minutes long.

The London to Egypt flight is about 4 hours and 45 minutes. There is also more demand for Easyjet flights from London to Egypt.

Same Destination Different Dates

This comparison shows prices for flights to the same destination but on different dates.

One flight is for the 28th of December when the demand is high and the other is for the 8th of April when demand is lower.

Adding Easyjet Cabin Baggage

There are two ways to add extra cabin luggage to your booking.

Adding One Extra Cabin Bag To Your Booking

The cheapest way to add cabin bags to your luggage allowance is to add them when you make your initial flight booking.

If you have to log back in and add the luggage later on it will cost more.

If you have to add it at the airport, because your luggage doesn’t comply with the rules it will be much more expensive.

Paying for a Standard Plus Fare

The other way to add 1 extra cabin bag is to choose a Standard Plus fare.

This includes speedy boarding and allocation in an Upfront Seat (rows 2-6).

Standard Plus fares are not offered for sale after a certain number of seats have been sold.

This means as the flight becomes busier there isn’t the option to book this fare.

Working out whether it’s cheaper to simply add an extra cabin bag or to pay for a Standard Plus fare depends on where you want to sit on the plane.

Cabin Baggage Costs Depend on Your Seat Preference

No Seat Reservation

If you are one of those crazy people that loves leaving your seat allocation to Easyjet so you don’t have to pay for it then the cheapest way for you to add a cabin bag to your booking is to add it when given the option.

Standard Seat Reservation

If you are one of those people, like me, cannot bear to leave their seat reservation to anyone else so books it themselves that’s great (it’s not just me!).

The cheapest way for you to add a cabin bag to your booking is to add it when given the option during your flight booking.

Upfront Seat

If you like to be first on or first off the plane and prefer an upfront seat then a Standard Plus fare might work out more cost effective for you.

To make it worthwhile you need to plan on using the speedy boarding aspect of the Standard Plus fare.

There is generally little difference in the cost of booking an upfront seat and adding a cabin bag compared to buying the Standard Plus fare.

For the flight above it was £1.50 cheaper to book an upfront seat and cabin bag compared to booking a Standard Plus fare.

If you book the Standard Plus fare you get speedy boarding included, if you book an upfront seat and add an extra cabin bag you don’t get speedy boarding included.

Mobility Equipment As Cabin Luggage

There is no charge for up to 2 pieces of mobility equipment per passenger that needs them.

You can take walkers and walking sticks onto the plane if need be.

You can take crutches on board as well.

Any walking aids needs to fit through the cabin door which is 1.7 metres high and 1.2 metres wide.

I would strongly advise requesting assistance if you need mobility aids as well as checking all the latest rules on the Easyjet website.

Medical Equipment as Cabin Luggage

Oxygen Cylinders

• Easyjet allows you to take 2 compressed air oxygen cylinders on board for personal medical use only.
• They must not exceed 56cm in length, with a maximum diameter of 25cm and they must not have a total weight of more than 5kg.
• There is no cost to take oxygen cylinders on board.

Other Medical Devices and Equipment

Easyjet allows you to take any medicines and medical equipment onboard that you need to have with you.

If you need gel packs or cooler bags to keep your medication cool these are permitted, as well as specialist food you need with you also.

You can also take portable medical equipment as long as they are no larger than 56x45x25cm.

This applies to equipment such as;

• CPAP machines
• Nebulisers
• TENS machines
• Portable dialysis machines

I would strongly advise requesting assistance if you need to take any medical equipment or devices on board checking all the latest rules on the Easyjet website.

Travelling With Children Under 2 Years Old

If you have a child sitting on your lap (allowed up until they are 2 years old) you can take an extra cabin bag – a changing bag.

This must be no larger than 45cm high x 36cm wide x 20cm deep.

Travelling with Children 2-5 Years Old

Children over 2 years old must have their own seat booking on an Easyjet flight.

As they have their own seat they also have their own included seat luggage allowance of 1 x 45x36x20cm underseat bag.

For any children 2-5 in their own seat there is an allowance of an additional changing bag which must be no more than 45x36x20cm.

There is no additional charge for this changing bag.

Musical Instruments as Cabin Baggage

If your musical instrument is smaller than 45x36x20cm you can take in instead of your underseat (included) bag/case.

It must fit under the seat in front of you.

If your musical instrument is larger than 45x36x20cm but smaller than 30cmx117x38cm then you need to book 1 extra piece of cabin luggage and take your instrument in place of this.

It must fit in the overhead locker.

Instruments Larger than 30cmx117x38cm

These can travel as cabin luggage but only by booking an extra seat.

Before you book a seat you need to check the size requirements and restrictions. You can find these on the Easyjet website. This includes maximum width, height above the seat etc.

The dimensions apply to the overall size of the instrument case, not the instrument itself.

To add the musical instrument to your booking you add another person and then put their name as ‘Mr Musical Instrument’ – yes really!

Don’t assume that because you are booking an extra seat you get to bring an extra underseat bag/case – you don’t.

Easyjet Plus Members

All Easyjet Plus members can take an additional cabin bag (56cmx45cmx25cm) for no extra cost.

Overhead locker space is not guaranteed so this may need to be checked in depending on how busy the flight is.

Airport Shopping Bag Allowance

In addition to your cabin baggage allowances and any extra cabin baggage you have purchased, you are also allowed 1 bag of airport shopping on the plane.

Some forums and sites have advised that travellers have taken an empty bag with them and used it as an extra luggage allowance i.e. they haven’t purchased anything at the airport.

My advice would be not to do that.

Easyjet could ask to see the receipt to prove that you purchased the items in the airport that day and if you can’t produce it you have just landed yourself with a checked bag charge.

If you are taking an underseat bag or case with you your shopping bag will have to be stowed in the overhead locker and a shopping bag from the airport isn’t that secure.

That said there is no rule about buying something small at the airport and asking for a slightly larger bag if you have something that you cannot squeeze into your cabin bag allowance.

My advice is to be reasonable. Don’t buy a bar of chocolate and ask for a huge bag and fill it full of other items.

No Personal Item on Easyjet

Many airlines allow customers to take a personal item onboard, as well as any cabin luggage they are allowed or have added to their flight booking.

There is no personal item allowance on Easyjet.

Easyjet gate staff are usually pretty strict at the gate. Make sure that your luggage can accommodate all the items you are travelling with, including any handbags and laptops for example, otherwise, you will have to check it in.

This is very expensive to do when at the gate.

• Everyone gets a 45cm high x 36cm wide x 20cm deep underseat bag/case included when they book an Easyjet flight.
• 1 extra cabin bag/case measuring 56 cm high x 45cm wide x 25cm deep can be added to your booking. Adding it as an extra item of luggage is generally the cheapest option.
• 2 mobility aids can be taken for free onto the plane, providing they meet the overall measurements.
• If you are travelling with children under 5 you can take a changing bag which must be no larger than 45cm x 36cm x 20cm.
• You can take a wide variety of medical equipment onboard. There are size and other requirements to comply with.
• You can take musical instruments onboard. If they are over a certain size you will need to book an additional seat for them. There are size and other requirements to comply with.
