What is Alicante Like?

Alicante is a coastal and port town located on the South Coast of Spain.

It is in the Costa Blanca area, which refers to the coastline and it’s a popular tourist destination.

Alicante has a population of around 350,000 people so it’s quite a busy place.

It’s a very friendly city that is used to welcoming tourists. It feels more like a town than a city.

Check out my photos for what it was like (these were taken during a November holiday)

Alicante Weather

One of the main reasons people visit Alicante is the warm weather, particularly in the winter period.

There isn’t much rain.

I went in November and enjoyed pleasant daytime temperatures of around 18 degrees Celsius. Evenings were a little cooler, but it was still warm enough to sit outside (also due to the abundance of outdoor heaters!).

One of the issues that Alicante has experienced in more recent years is very hot weather in June, July and August. Uncomfortably hot. The type of weather where you can’t sit outside, unless you want to burn to a crisp.

It’s been in the high 30 degrees Celsius, at times heading past the 40 degrees Celsius range.

There have also been some periods of drought more recently too.

Staying in Alicante

Alicante is easy to reach from the UK with plenty of budget flight options available.

There is also plenty of accommodation.

As with most places staying a little out of season means you will get better value.

I stayed at the lovely Hotel Spa Porta Maris right beside the sea.

It overlooked the beach and was also within easy reach of all the attractions.

Things To Do in Alicante

I stayed for 4 nights in Alicante.

I enjoyed wandering through the centre of the town, finding nice tapas bars, coffee shops and restaurants for evening meals.

I also visited the castle on top of the hill overlooking Alicante. The views were amazing and there was a cute little cafe there was well.

One of the great things about being in Alicante is the local transport.

It’s very easy to explore by tram and I did just that. The tram was super simple to use and navigate and I explored along the coast by simply hopping on and hopping off.

It was also lovely having breakfast every day by the beach and enjoying feeling warm sand underneath my feet.

Overall Alicante Experience

Alicante was good value for money in November.

The restaurants and places to eat that I visited were reasonably priced. I would go back to Alicante just to visit Mish Mish Lebanese restaurant – it was amazing.

I would also go back to Alicante to experience the Spring festival where they burn huge papier mache sculptures.

I would also recommend Alicante as a good base for exploring the coast using public transport.

Alicante FAQs

Is Alicante a Beach Holiday?

It absolutely can be if you want it to. There is a fabulous beach right beside Alicante next to the Marina area, with lovely golden sand. Sea temperatures are good and there is a cooling sea breeze. Temperatures can exceed 40 degrees in the height of summer.

What is The Best Time of Year to Visit Alicante?

If you like it warm but not too hot then March, April, October, and November are great months to visit. If you like it hot but not sweltering then May and September are great months to visit. If you like it scorching then June, July, and August are the best months to visit.

Is Alicante a Walkable City?

Yes, it is very easy to explore Alicante on foot. There is a lovely promenade, a great beach area, a marina and an old town as well as the more commercial part of town.

Alicante Holidays Conclusion

  • Alicante is a great destination with plenty of flights available from the UK.
  • It has a lovely beach, interesting attractions and great places to eat.
  • The temperatures mean that Alicante is also a great option for off-season breaks too.
