Is Valencia Worth Visiting?

This beautiful Spanish city is well worth visiting. It has a beautiful old city centre, an amazing park, modern architecture, lots to visit and the best orange juice in the world!

Valencia was a destination I chose for a solo female trip to see how I managed on my own for 4 nights.

Having been to Barcelona before I wanted to visit somewhere that was a little smaller and quieter. Valencia was a perfect option.

Valencia has a population of 750,000 people compared to Barcelona’s 1.69 million people.

It has a beautiful park area, a wonderful old city with a great food market and a bonkers Spring festival with a huge parade of papier mache figures.

Valencia had lots of Spanish visitors when I was there, many more than any other nationality. I really liked that.

When to Visit Valencia?

I visited Valencia in March. It was very comfortable with temperatures in the high teens. It was comfortable enough to explore without a coat on (at least for those of us from the Highlands in Scotland).

Temperatures in the summer months reach 30 degrees.

Here are the year round temperatures.

Getting Around Valencia

There are two metro lines which connect Valencia and the airport – line number 3 and line number 5.

They are very reasonable – about 5 Euros. There are cheaper options available including a bus for about 2 Euros.

You can find more information on the Valencia Airport website

If you don’t fancy taking the bus you could always book your own transfer from the airport πŸ‘‡

Is Valencia Safe?

I found Valencia very safe as a solo female traveller, including walking out past midnight.

Valencia scores low to moderate on all types of crime, whereas London scores moderate to high. Valencia scores moderately for people using drugs.

Is Valencia Expensive?

I found Valencia to be good value. My accommodation was under Β£200 for 4 nights. That was an apartment with a hot tub on the roof terrace.

Food was reasonable and activities were too.

I really enjoyed seeing a flamenco show and I also took a Spanish language lesson where I practised Spanish and other people practised their English.

I visit the Fallas Museum which was absolutely fascinating. I spent a couple of hours there and the entrance was about 6 Euros so it was great value.

Valencia seemed geared more to Spanish visitors rather than tourists from other countries.

Staying in Valencia

I stayed in a small apartment in Valencia. It was on the top floor of a building in the old city.

It had a kitchen, lounge, separate bedroom and a roof terrace with a hot tub. It cost under Β£200 for 4 nights which was great value. It was called the Atico El Centro.

Things to Do in Valencia

I did a lot of walking when I was in Valencia – it was the main way I got around the city.

Here’s where I visited;

Turia Gardens

There used to be a river flowing around Valencia, but it has been diverted. Instead of building on the land, the city turned it into the largest public park in Spain.

Turia Gardens wraps around two-thirds of the city and provides a lovely way to get around. The gardens are full of interest, including:

  • Running and cycling tracks
  • Sports areas
  • Water gardens
  • Themed gardens

You will also find plenty of locals enjoying these spaces

The Fallas Museum

I loved this museum and spent around 2 hours here. They keep a figure from the Fallas Festival parade each year. I loved learning the political and social stories behind the figures – it was like reading a social history of Valencia through the years.

The Market Hall

There is a lovely market hall in the old city. I enjoyed seeing the local produce and I eating at the food stalls in the market too. I also took home some lovely dishes including an amazing Plov rice dish.

The Silk Exchange

I really enjoyed visiting the silk exchange. It’s a historic building near the market hall. There are lots messages in the figures used in the decoration of this building. I used an audioguide and found the descriptions very interesting too.

Budapest Surprises

I found Valencia full of pleasant surprises. The city was very easy to walk around, with friendly locals too.

The orange juice was absolutely delicious – I would go back to Valencia just for that.

The food prices were great too. I had breakfast of orange juice, coffee and toast with tomatoes for 2 Euros.

Is Valencia Worth Visiting? – Conclusion

  • Valencia is definitely worth visiting – particularly if you are looking for somewhere a little less busy and touristy than Barcelona
  • Valencia is good value with prices aimed more at Spanish visitors
  • There is a lot to do in this lovely city which is very easy to explore on foot
