I’ve explored Riga three times now — with a tour group, solo, and with family — and each visit uncovered new reasons to love this Baltic beauty. Whichever way you like to travel, there’s a great base for you here.

Riga really breaks down into three practical options, and where you should stay depends on what matters most to you:

• Near the airport — best if you have an early flight or a short stopover
• The Old Town — best if you want to walk everywhere and don’t mind paying a bit more for it
• The Bellevue Park area (across the river, on the tram line) — best value, with the Old Town just a short, easy tram ride away

Sky High Hotel (£)

The Sky High Hotel is the closest hotel to the airport terminal building — you can walk there in under 10 minutes.

Rooms are basic, more like a budget hotel, and reviews are mixed (it scores around 3.5 out of 5 on Tripadvisor, with some comments about noise).

Most guests choose it simply because they have an early flight and it’s incredibly convenient.

Hampton by Hilton Riga Airport (££)

• The Hampton by Hilton is around 0.5 miles from Riga Airport, so still easily walkable, and about a 5-minute drive.
• Rooms are modern, well-furnished and decorated, and the rates are very reasonable for the quality.
• Reviews are consistently good, and bus number 22 — which runs to and from the airport and the city centre — stops right outside the hotel too.

Kepler Club (£££)

• If money isn’t the deciding factor and you’d simply rather not leave the terminal at all, Kepler Club is worth knowing about.
• It’s the first capsule-style hotel in the Baltics, built directly into Riga Airport.
• It offers private sleeping cabins with premium bedding, a smart TV with Netflix, and your own bathroom — available both airside (if you’re transiting) and landside.
• It’s not a traditional hotel room, but for a genuinely early departure or a long layover, it’s about as convenient — and as private — as it gets, and it commands a premium price for that convenience.

Old Town Hotels

The Old Town is the best area to stay if you want everything on your doorstep — cobbled streets, the House of the Blackheads, St Peter’s Church, the Central Market — all within walking distance, no transport needed.

Hotel Justus (£)

• Hotel Justus is a 4-star boutique hotel on Jauniela street, literally a few steps from Dome Cathedral — about as central as the Old Town gets.
• It consistently comes in well below the Old Town’s luxury price bracket, with rooms often available from around €50-55 a night.
• It’s a genuinely historic building (guests are often told the facade even featured in a Latvian TV series), with just 45 rooms combining exposed brickwork with a mix of antique and contemporary furnishings.
• Reviews are excellent — consistently 8.5+ out of 10 across booking sites, with well over 2,500 reviews — and guests repeatedly single out the breakfast buffet and the helpfulness of reception staff for restaurant tips and local recommendations.
• There’s also an on-site sauna and restaurant.
• Parking is off-site rather than at the hotel itself, so it suits guests without a car better than those driving in.

Radisson Blu Latvija Conference & Spa Hotel (££)

• The Radisson Blu Latvija Conference & Spa Hotel is a tall building located within easy reach of the Freedom Monument. Rooms on the upper floors facing the Old Town have an amazing view over the city and the golden-domed church nearby.
• Rooms are compact — understandable given the city-centre location — but clean and well-equipped. You can walk to the Old Town and the Art Nouveau area very easily from here, with bus and tram routes nearby too.
• The hotel has a lovely spa, bar and restaurant — I stayed here with a tour group and we had one of the best hotel buffets I’ve had on any tour!

(If a spa is your priority and you want to be even deeper in the Old Town itself, the Wellton Spa Hotel is also worth a look — it’s right by the Central Market with the Old Town on its doorstep, though reviews mention breakfast times can get busy.)

Grand Poet Hotel by Semarah (£££)

• The Grand Poet Hotel by Semarah is a genuinely luxurious hotel in the heart of the Old Town.
• Rooms are large, some with rolltop bathtubs, some with four-poster beds — the furnishings and fittings throughout are luxurious too.
• It has an impressive 5 out of 5 “Excellent” rating on Tripadvisor, with great comments about the breakfast (eggs cooked fresh to order) and plenty of praise for the spa.
• The location means it’s effortless to explore the Old Town on foot, and just as easy to reach further afield using public transport.
• Prices are higher than the others on this list, but there are good deals to be found with a bit of searching and flexibility on dates.

Bellevue Park Area Hotels (Best Value, Tram to the Old Town)

Across the river from the Old Town, the area around Uzvaras Park offers some of the best value in the city — and thanks to an excellent tram network, the Old Town is never more than about 10-15 minutes away.

Bellevue Park Hotel (£)

• The Bellevue Park Hotel is set on the edge of the park, and it’s genuinely one of the best-value stays in Riga.
• Bus number 22 (which runs to and from the airport and city centre) stops right outside, as do a variety of other buses and several trams — it’s around a 10-minute tram ride to the Central Market.
• Standard rooms are around £35 a night including breakfast, with upgrades available to suites and apartments with kitchenettes — some suites even have fireplaces and balconies.
• The hotel has free parking at the front, and breakfast is a proper hot and cold buffet: porridge, eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, hash browns, plus salads, yoghurts, cereals, bread, pastries and fruit.
• Reception staff are friendly and helpful, and there’s a wellness area with a sauna, jacuzzi and Turkish bath (book in advance), plus a restaurant, bar and two small shops.

• If Bellevue Park is full, or you want something a little more contemporary in the same part of town, the Park Inn by Radisson Riga Valdemara is a solid mid-range choice on the same west bank of the Daugava River.
• It’s just two public transport stops from the Old Town, with most rooms offering panoramic views over the river, and upper floors looking straight across to the Old Town skyline.
• It’s a modern 178-room chain hotel — not full of character, but reliable, comfortable, and well placed for the tram network.
