Vienna City Centre and City Districts

Vienna is very easy to understand and navigate.

The historic centre, the 1st District, is where most of the tourist attractions are including the Hofburg Palace.

The heart of this area is St Stephensplatz. There are lots of transport connections that meet here too.

The 1st District is a large area which also runs alongside the Danube canal.

Leopoldstadt, 2nd District, runs between the Danube canal and the Danube river. This is where the Prater park is, making it ideal if you want to enjoy lots of park walks and picnics.

Landstrasse, 3rd District, includes the beautiful Belvedere Palace and the quirky Hundertwasserhaus. It also has lots of green spaces.

All these districts are easy to explore on foot and are well connected by public transport.

These are the main districts to stay in if you want to be within easy reach of the city centre attractions, making them ideal for first time visitors to Vienna.

  • Want something a bit more lively with good shops? Try Mariahilf (6th) District
