Is Budapest Safe? It’s Pretty Safe Most of the Time

If you are wondering whether Budapest is safe then read on for my experience.

Budapest and Hungary have experienced some issues in relation to political protests and demonstrations so it is worth checking and planning ahead before visiting.

Read on for my experience of visiting Budapest as a solo female traveller.

Is Budapest Safe?

Budapest is generally a safe city to visit.

It scores lower than London across all crimes, apart from bribery and corruption. It has around 60% less reported crime than London.

There are some issues for visitors to be aware of when visiting Budapest. The Foreign Office advises the following;

Bag snatching and pickpocketing are issues in busy areas such as food markets and public transport. You should be extra careful of your personal belongings when you approach stops as these are the likeliest times for anything to happen.

Some places don’t display prices and then charge tourists extortionate prices, forcing them to go to ATMs if they don’t have enough cash.

There have been issues with drinks being spiked so extra care is advised if you are planning going out drinking, especially if you are visiting nightclubs.

Taking care of your personal belongings should help minimise any risk when travelling to and around Budapest.

Political Protests and Demonstrations

There has been an increase in political protests and demonstrations in Budapest as Viktor Orban imposes new rules and regulations.

A recent example was banning the Pride 2025 festival, where participants were threatened with prison for taking part. The Government said that they would use facial recognition technlogy to identify those taking part. The result was the largest Pride Festival the city had ever held.

The 15th of March and the 23rd October are dates when previous uprisings are celebrated. There is a risk that these celebrations can escalate into something else.

If you do come across any political rallies or events the Foreign Office advises that you move away from the crowds. This reduces the risk of becoming unwittingly involved if things do escalate or become more serious.

Those who identify as LBGTQI are advised to be cautious. Currently Budapest is generally welcoming, but outside of the city it is not as welcomed so outward displays of affection may be riskier.

My Experience of Budapest

I used public transport when visiting Budapest, including the airport bus and a train.

I also walked alot including walking to my accommodation at around 10.30pm one night when it was dark. I walked to my accommodation which involved walking along a very poorly lit street as well.

I felt safe during my visit to Budapest. I took sensible precautions as always, including having my cash and money in a small shoulder bag under my jumper.

I did not witness any issues during my two days there.

Is Budapest Safe? – Conclusion

  • Vienna is a safe city to visit – just be mindful of any political activity or changes that might results in political protests.
  • Taking the usual precautions you would when visiting anywhere is recommended
