Sitting by the cathedral one morning, people-watching over tomatoes on toast, a smooth coffee and orange juice β that breakfast cost me 2 euros and I still think about it. It’s the kind of morning that makes a solo trip like this worth taking.
Who Should Go and Who Should Skip Valencia
Valencia is for you if:
- You want something quieter and less overwhelming than Barcelona, without giving up culture, architecture and a proper old town
- You’re happy exploring mostly on foot and don’t need everything geared toward English-speaking tourists
- You want good value β food, activities and accommodation that don’t sting
- You’re travelling solo (including solo female travel) and want somewhere that feels comfortable to be out in late
- You’d rather spend a morning in a market hall or a museum than queue for a big-name attraction
Skip it if:
- You want a big-city buzz, nightlife or a large international crowd β Valencia is mostly popular with Spanish visitors, which is part of its appeal but not what everyone wants
- You’re chasing beaches as the main event β Valencia’s beach isn’t the draw here (although it is within easy reach of the city centre)
- You want everything laid on for tourists β some of the charm of Valencia is that it is more geared towards Spanish visitor
- You’ve got limited mobility or don’t want to walk much β walking is genuinely the best way to see Valencia
Is Valencia Worth Visiting?
Valencia was a destination I chose for a solo female trip to see how I managed on my own for 4 nights.
Having been to Barcelona before I wanted to visit somewhere that was a little smaller and quieter. Valencia was a perfect option.
Valencia has a population of 750,000 people compared to Barcelona’s 1.69 million people.
It has a beautiful park area, a wonderful old city with a great food market and a bonkers Spring festival with a huge parade of papier mache figures.
Valencia had lots of Spanish visitors when I was there, many more than any other nationality. I really liked that.

When to Visit Valencia?
I visited Valencia in March and it was the perfect temperature – warm without being hot and there was no rain during my visit. I found the temperature great for walking everywhere, and it is easy to walk a great deal in Valencia. I didn’t even need a coat for most of my trip – I pretty much carried my coat to Valencia, stored it in the apartment and brought it home again.
Temperatures in the summer months can reach more than 30 degrees making it difficult to explore and enjoy if you prefer temperatures warmer rather than hot.
Here are the year round temperatures for Valencia.

Getting Around Valencia
There are two metro lines which connect Valencia and the airport – line number 3 and line number 5.
They are very reasonable – about 5 Euros. There are cheaper options available including a bus for about 2 Euros.
You can find more information on the Valencia Airport website
If you don’t fancy taking the bus you could always book your own transfer from the airport π

Is Valencia Safe?
I found Valencia very safe as a solo female traveller, including walking out past midnight.
Valencia scores low to moderate on all types of crime, whereas London scores moderate to high. Valencia scores moderately for people using drugs.

Is Valencia Expensive?
I found Valencia to be good value.
Apartment: Β£50/night – 4 nights = Β£200
Breakfast – orange juice, coffee, toast β 2 euros
Fallas Museum: 6 euros
Flamenco show: 15 euros
Valencia seemed geared more to Spanish visitors rather than tourists from other countries which is why I think the prices are a bit more reasonable.

Staying in Valencia
I stayed in a small apartment in Valencia. It was on the top floor of a building in the old city.
It had a kitchen, lounge, separate bedroom and a roof terrace with a hot tub. It cost under Β£200 for 4 nights which was great value. It was called the Atico El Centro.

Things to Do in Valencia
I did a lot of walking when I was in Valencia – it was the main way I got around the city.
Here’s where I visited;
Turia Gardens
There used to be a river flowing around Valencia, but it has been diverted. Instead of building on the land, the city turned it into the largest public park in Spain.
Turia Gardens wraps around two-thirds of the city and provides a lovely way to get around. The gardens are full of interest, including:
- Running and cycling tracks
- Sports areas
- Water gardens
- Themed gardens
There were plenty of locals using these spaces too. Expect to meet people walking, jogging, cycling, walking dogs, playing sports or simply getting from one part of the city to another.
I enjoyed seeing the everyday activities going on as I walked through the park. I also though the massive Gulliver play structure was great for the kids.
I spent a 2-4 hours walking through the park during my visit and enjoyed a lovely view across the gardens from a cafe at the edge of the park too.
The Fallas Museum
I loved this museum and spent around 2 -3 hours here.
Each year the people of Valencia vote to keep one of the figures from the Fallas Festival and to put it into the museum. The museum tells the story not only of the figures in the museum but of the much larger sculpture there.
Each of the figures has a hidden story and the museum tells these stories in an interesting way – the museum tells the social history of Valencia through the figures from the Fallas Festival.
I loved learning about the hidden meanings such as the young boy telling his Grandma that she was cheating by using convenience foods when cooking – the sculpture was illustrating the changing food culture in Valencia.
The Market Hall
There is a lovely market hall in the old city.
It is a great place to browse the local produce, to enjoy some of the sights, sounds and smells of daily life and to pick up some great takeaway food.
There are also a few cafes in the market hall too.
The Silk Exchange
The Silk Exchange is an old building in the old town.
There were lots of hidden meanings in the building, such as figures around the doorway, or motifs and decor that I would have missed the meaning of without the audioguide.
I spent 1-2 hours here.

Valencia Surprises
I found Valencia full of pleasant surprises. The city was very easy to walk around, with friendly locals too.
The orange juice was absolutely delicious – I would go back to Valencia just for that.
The food prices were great too. I had breakfast of orange juice, coffee and toast with tomatoes for 2 Euros.
One unexpected surprise.
Is Valencia Worth Visiting? – Conclusion
- Valencia is definitely worth visiting – particularly if you are looking for somewhere a little less busy and touristy than Barcelona
- Valencia is good value with prices aimed more at Spanish visitors
- There is a lot to do in this lovely city which is very easy to explore on foot
