Monte Gordo is a mix of hotels, apartment buildings, and residential buildings.

In terms of size, Monte Gordo is small, with only around 3,500 people living there. However, it can accommodate many more in the holiday accommodation.

Lots of Portuguese folk have holiday homes here.

I stayed for 4 nights and really enjoyed the quieter feel of this town and the easy access to Spain.

Little Tip from Me: Faro and Seville are connected by buses making it easy to fly into one airport and out of the other

You can also travel by Flixbus to Faro. The journey takes around 40-45 hours and goes via Paris and Lisbon which would also make nice stops along the way.

There is a lovely option for travelling by train. The Eurostar takes you to Paris where you connect to a train to Barcelona. After an overnight stay it’s off to Seville by train and then a bus ride to Faro.

When to Visit Monte Gordo?

I visited Monte Gordo in November.

It was warm enough for me to go everywhere without a coat – about 18 degrees.

It was slightly out of season so many of the beach cafes were closed, there were only a few places with loungers on the beach and some of the places in the town were closed too.

That was reflected in the price we paid.

The weather below is for Tavira which is the nearest larger town near to Monte Gordo.

Getting Around Monte Gordo

I hired a car for my stay in Monte Gordo. Hiring a car for 4 days worked out cheaper than a transfer from the airport and made exploring much easier.

I had driven in the Algarve before so I knew my way around pretty well.

Monte Gordo is small enough that it is easy to walk everywhere.

There are buses and the train line runs along the coast too if you want to use public transport.

Is Monte Gordo Safe?

I found Monte Gordo to be safe, including walking everywhere at night and travelling by car at night.

It is a very small town – the kind of place where people notice what is going on.

In terms of crime rates it has much lower rates of crime and somewhere like Albufeira, where crime rates are low compared to the UK anyway.

Is Monte Gordo Expensive?

Monte Gordo was really good value.

Prices seemed geared more to locals rather than visitors.

For some reason I had opted for a half board stay, which was a mistake. This meant that staying in a 4 star hotel, in a suite, half board with flights from Glasgow worked out at £400 for the two of us.

We did still eat out one night and tried a local fish restaurant. It was excellent and very reasonable – costing around £20 for the two of us. It was some of the best fish I’ve ever eaten.

I also ate out for breakfast one morning. For a delicious local cake and coffee it was 2 Euros, and that was in a cafe!

Staying in Monte Gordo

I stayed at the Prime Energise Hotel. It was locally within easy walking distance of the beach. It also had a beach bar area where you could have breakfast for a supplement.

Due to it being November the beach loungers were put away when we visited.

I chose the hotel because of it’s pool and leisure facilities.

Things to Do in Monte Gordo

I spent a day exploring the beautiful wide sandy beach of Monte Gordo. This beaches stretches all the way round to the Spanish border. It was lovely to walk on the beach and to chill on a sun lounger – although there was a bit of a fresh breeze.

There was also a nice town area to explore with some pedestrianised streets and small shops.

I also enjoyed walking along the wooden promenade and found a lovely little coffee shop right where the fishing boats were bringing in their catch.

I took a drive out to Tavira to visit the food market. This is a great stop if you want to see some local produce, but don’t leave it too late, by lunchtime most things will be sold and the market will be closing down.

I also took a visit to Vila Real – a lovely town with cobbled streets close to the border with Spain. This had nice gift shops, cafes and restaurants and made for a pleasant couple of hours exploring.

I drove across to Spain just to explore a bit of coast I hadn’t been to before.

Monte Gordo Surprises

I really liked the town of Monte Gordo. It was friendly and welcoming and felt very local compared to some other parts of the Algarve that can get a bit overwhelmed with visitors.

The hotel experience was a little weird so that impacted our impression of our stay. Meal times had to be booked in advance, by choosing time slots for breakfast and dinner for the whole stay on arrival. We had to keep the same time slot. This wasn’t great as there was limited choice and the buffet was repetitive.

There were also some issues using the leisure centre which was frustrating since this was one of the reasons I booked the hotel.

However, I would definitely visit Monte Gordo again. The beach was amazing and I liked the small friendly feel of the place.
