Is Riga Expensive? Here’s All You Need to Know

If you have been thinking of visiting Riga but wondering if it’s expensive then read on to check out my experience and costs when visiting.

(The short answer is I found it good value!)

Is Riga Expensive to Visit?

Is Latvia Riga Cheap?

I would say that Riga is good value compared to some other destinations in Europe. It’s reasonable to get there, there are hotels to suit all budgets and activities and entertainment is great value too.

Having visited Riga 3 times in the space of around 10 years now I can say that I found Riga to be good value each time.

One of my stays was with a tour group but the other two stays were for personal trips.

Here is an overview of the costs.

Is Riga Expensive?

One Night Stay in Riga as a Solo Traveller

This was a one-night trip as a stopover. I deliberately chose a stopover in Riga as I wanted to go to the Aspara Tea House (no longer there, unfortunately).

As such I chose a hotel near the bus station so I could be close to it.

The Hotel Opera was a comfortable hotel and one night cost 38 pounds. This was for a double bedded en suite room with full breakfast included the next day.

The cost of the flight back to the UK was less than 30 pounds.

I didn’t do any activities other than going to the tea house on this overnight trip.

3 Night Stay in Riga for 2 People

Total costs for 3 nights in a 4 Star hotel and return flights from the UK – 225 pounds (this included reserved seats for the flights for both journeys)

We also bought unlimited use transport tickets which cost 5 Euros for 24 hours travel. We used these on the trams and local buses. The journey out to the museum took around 45 minutes and was still included in the cost.

We also used the tram to get from Bellvue Park Hotel to the old town, making it very easy to reach the attractions.

Is Riga Expensive for Tourists? Costs of Activities

Activities were reasonably priced too.

The KGB Museum is free to visit if you just want to go and have a look at their displays.

The tour was 10 Euros per person which I thought was reasonable given there was a super knowledgeable tour guide and it lasted about an hour.

Entry to Riga Motor Museum was 2 Euros which was ridiculously cheap given the size of the museum. It’s a great museum, well laid out and with interpretation panels in English as well.

We ate at the museum cafe, which was very good and also very reasonably priced too.

The National Library was free to visit.

Eating and Drinking Costs

On all my visits to Riga, I have found the cost of eating and drinking very reasonable.

I should say that I’m not into eating in fancy or expensive restaurants. I like nice places that are good value.

We ate at the local LIDO restaurants, which are all-you-can-eat buffet-type places with Latvian dishes on offer. These were very popular with local people too.

We also ate at some small local bakeries which had cafes inside them.

The Central Market also has some food stalls inside it. We found the food and drinks very good and great value, as market stalls often are.

Is Riga Expensive – Conclusion

  • Riga is good value in terms of costs for getting there, getting around and staying there.
  • If you are looking for a city break that is within easy reach of the UK then Riga is a great value option.
