Is Vilamoura Safe?

I stayed in Vilamoura as a solo female traveller, having actually arrived with a friend of mine. We parted ways after 1 night and I moved to another hotel, staying for a further 3 nights.

I walked alot around the local area and I also drove all round the area in my rental car too.

Walking felt safe in that I didn’t feel at risk of any crime. The main issue was a lack of pavements in a couple of places which meant walking along the road. The traffic was quite fast so it was a bit nerve wracking. However, locals were also walking the same route.

I visited various cafes, shops and other places in and around Vilamoura. I didn’t feel uncomfortable at any point and was able to enjoy strolling around enjoying the pretty town and surrounding areas.

I took a very long walk one day and walked so far that I wasn’t able to walk back. I went to a hotel and they called me a taxi, and the driver took me back to my hotel. I felt safe and comfortable throughout my walk and comfortable in the taxi coming back to my hotel.

Areas Around Vilamoura

I like exploring when I am travelling so I decided to head out to a different part of the coast, just along from Vilamoura. The area I visited was a little run down but I still felt safe and comfortable driving around the area, and then going for a walk along the beach.

On another day I headed into the hills, which are not visited much by tourists. I did a full day circular drive. I visited several small villages and towns that were full of locals, with no visitors. Despite language barriers I felt very safe and welcome in all of these places, including stopping for walks, coffee, and photos.

I finished up my drive in the bigger town of Loule and although it was much busier I felt safe and comfortable walking around the town and exploring the market. I didn’t feel that pickpockets were an issue in the market area, leaving me free to browse the lovely stalls. I also sat out in a street cafe and enjoyed the views across the main street.

Algarve Crime Rates

Crime rates in the Algarve are fairly low compared to Lisbon.

Loule, Faro and Albufeira have the highest crime rates, with the most common crime being simple assault, followed by drink driving and domestic violence.

Vilamoura is little quieter, and less populated and also attracts a slightly different type of visitor. There are more golf clubs in Vilamoura as opposed to Albufeira, which means it attracts more golfers for holidays.

There are issues with drug use. Portugal takes a very different approach than most other countries to drug use. Drug use is not illegal, but dealing drugs is.

How Big is Vilamoura?

Vilamoura population is 22,000, but there can be 150,000 staying there during the peak summer months.

Albufeira has a population of 50,000 but this can increase to 300,000 in the peak travel months.

65,000 people live in Faro. Many visitors fly into Faro and then travel to other places such as Albufeira for their holiday.

Around 70,000 people live in Loule. This is a busy market town, which many people on holiday might visit for a day or so. However, it’s inland from the coast of the Algarve and it is the coast and beaches that most visitors head to.

Is Vilamoura Safe? – Conclusion

  • Vilamoura is a relatively safe place to visit. Normal precautions when travelling area always recommended.
  • It felt perfectly safe for me as a solo female traveller, with all the places I visited in Vilamoura being used to tourists and visitors.
