Thinking about a Riviera Travel cruise on the Douro? Good choice – it’s one of the most popular river cruises with British travellers, and for good reason.
I’m a Riviera River Cruise Expert, an independent travel agent and a former tour manager who has taken a group of 140 guests along the full Douro route.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through Riviera’s three Douro ships, the cabins, the two itineraries and what’s included, so you can decide which sailing suits you.
A note on honesty: I haven’t yet sailed with Riviera on the Douro myself. This guide combines my first-hand experience of the river and its excursions with my Riviera training and the latest details from Riviera. For my personal day-by-day account of the river, read my Douro river cruise review.

Are Riviera River Cruises Any Good?
Riviera has a loyal following and a very high rate of repeat bookings. It’s rated Excellent on both Trustpilot and Feefo, and it offers a Happiness Guarantee: if you’re not happy by the end of day two, Riviera will bring you home and refund your holiday.
What Riviera does particularly well for British travellers:
- Regional flights, so you’re not forced to travel to London
- Little home comforts, such as kettles and tea in the cabins
- A strong reputation with solo travellers, including dedicated single cabins and solo-only departures
- Its own cruise directors on board, which makes a real difference when things don’t go to plan – something I know well from my own tour-managing days
Riviera’s Douro Ships Compared
Riviera now has three ships on the Douro. All three are built to fit the river’s five locks, so they’re smaller than ships on the Rhine or Danube, and every cabin faces the river.
| Riviera Rose | Douro Elegance | Douro Splendour | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2025 | 2017 | 2018 |
| Guests | 114 | Around 120–126 | Around 120–126 |
| Itinerary | Highlights of the Douro Valley & Salamanca | Douro, Porto & Salamanca | Douro, Porto & Salamanca |
| Standard cabin size | From about 16 m² (172 sq ft) | About 15 m² (160 sq ft) on middle/upper decks | About 15 m² (160 sq ft) on middle/upper decks |

MS Riviera Rose – The Newest Ship
Riviera Rose joined the Douro in 2025 and is Riviera’s first ship with a new split-level design. Skylights and big windows make it feel light and open – perfect for a river where the scenery is the star.
- 114 guests and 38 crew, so it feels intimate
- 57 cabins over three decks, all with beds that convert from double to twin, a rain shower, a flatscreen TV, a kettle and a coffee machine
- UK plug sockets – a small thing, but guests love it
- The Rio Bistro, a double-height conservatory at the back of the ship that opens onto the sun deck
- A long splash pool and plenty of loungers on the sun deck
- A panoramic lounge above the restaurant, with views across the valley
- Diamond Deck cabins and suites come with Riviera Plus extras if you want a little more luxury
Little Tip from Me: If you’re a first-timer on the Douro and want the newest ship, Riviera Rose is the one to ask about. The larger standard cabins are a real plus on a week-long cruise.
MS Douro Elegance and MS Douro Splendour – The Sister Ships
These two near-identical sister ships have been Riviera’s Douro workhorses since 2017 and 2018. They’re well-loved, comfortable and often slightly better value than the newer ship.
- Four passenger decks, with a lift between the three cabin decks. The sun deck is reached by stairs.
- Lower deck: the smallest cabins (around 12 m²) with fixed windows, plus a small gym. Several are set aside as single cabins.
- Main deck: the restaurant, a small spa, and standard cabins with French balconies.
- Upper deck: most of the cabins, the suites, reception and the lounge bar, with a small outdoor area at the front.
- Sun deck: loungers and a splash pool.

Choosing Your Cabin
Standard Cabins With French Balconies
On the main and upper decks, standard cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows that slide down. This is called a French (or Juliet) balcony. It’s lovely for fresh air and views, but there’s no space to sit outside.

Suites
Suites are noticeably larger. On Riviera Rose, the balcony suites are around 24 m² (258 sq ft). If you plan to spend time in your cabin watching the valley go by, a suite is worth considering.

Lower Deck Cabins
These are smaller, with fixed windows set higher up the wall, but they’re the best value. If you’ll mostly be on the sun deck or on excursions, they’re a sensible choice.

Little Tip from Me: On any river ship, cabins near the engines at the back can be noisier. When I book for clients, I check the exact cabin position against the deck plan – it’s one of the easiest ways to improve a cruise.
Riviera Douro Cruises for Solo Travellers
Riviera is one of the best river cruise companies for solo travellers.
- Douro Elegance and Douro Splendour have dedicated single cabins on the lower deck with no single supplement.
- Riviera runs solo-only departures on the Douro, where everyone on board is travelling on their own.
- Single cabins sell out quickly, so book early.
Travelling Solo?
Single cabins on the Douro are limited and go fast. Let me check which sailings still have them available.
The Two Riviera Douro Itineraries
Riviera runs two versions of its Douro cruise. Both are 8 days round trip from Porto and cover the same core highlights.
- Douro, Porto & Salamanca – on Douro Elegance and Douro Splendour
- Highlights of the Douro Valley & Salamanca – on Riviera Rose. This version gives you some choices of excursion, for example Castelo Rodrigo or the prehistoric rock art of the Côa Valley, and Salamanca or the fortified town of Almeida.
Both can be booked with a Lisbon extension if you’d like to add a few nights in Portugal’s capital.
The order of visits varies between ships and dates. Here’s a typical week.

Day 1 – Fly to Porto and Board
Fly from your chosen UK airport to Porto (some departures may route via Lisbon, which is a much longer transfer). The ship moors at Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, about 40 minutes from Porto airport. If you land before midday, expect to wait while the ship is prepared for your sailing. Your first night is spent moored in Gaia.
Little Tip from Me: Pack what you need for the afternoon in your hand luggage, so you can relax on deck while your suitcase is delivered to your cabin.
Day 2 – Cruising Upriver, Locks and Mateus Palace
A long cruising day out of Porto, under the bridges and through the Crestuma-Lever lock (25 m) and the spectacular Carrapatelo lock (57 m), one of the highest in Europe. Watch from the front of the ship if you can.
The included excursion to Mateus Palace – the house on the Mateus Rosé label – takes in the palace and its beautiful gardens. Many sailings also include a dinner at a local quinta with matching wines.
Day 3 – Pinhão and Castelo Rodrigo
Cruise through the Régua lock into the heart of port country around Pinhão – some of the best scenery of the week. Then continue upriver through the Valeira and Pocinho locks towards the Spanish border.
The afternoon visit to Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, a walled hilltop village, is lovely, but expect cobbles, slopes and uneven paths. On Riviera Rose, the Côa Valley rock art is offered as an alternative.
Day 4 – Salamanca, Spain
A full day (around 10 hours) across the border to Salamanca, a UNESCO city with one of Europe’s oldest universities and two cathedrals. Expect a guided walk, lunch with a flamenco show and free time around the stunning Plaza Mayor.
The coach journey is about two hours each way, and the first part climbs very twisty roads out of the valley.
Little Tip from Me: I felt travel sick on this road when I did the trip, so take something if you’re prone to it. When I went, there was no comfort stop until we reached Salamanca, so check this if it matters to you. On Riviera Rose, the shorter trip to Almeida is an alternative.
Day 5 – A Relaxing Day of Cruising
Most of today is spent cruising back downstream through the valley. It’s a perfect sun-deck day. Many sailings add an evening quinta visit with a tasting.
Day 6 – Lamego
A visit to Lamego and its sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, with its baroque staircase of nearly 700 steps. You don’t have to climb – transport takes you up – but if you do walk, some steps are deep and uneven. The evening usually brings a special dinner and a Portuguese folk show on board.
Day 7 – Back to Porto, Port Cellar and City Tour
Cruise back into Vila Nova de Gaia – don’t miss sailing under Porto’s bridges. Visit a port cellar for a tasting, then take a tour of Porto, mostly by coach with short walks, including the Sé Cathedral. Riviera Rose sailings may offer Guimarães as an alternative.
Day 8 – Fly Home
Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport. If your flight leaves early in the morning, expect a very early start and possibly a lighter breakfast – worth checking your flight time when you book.
Riviera Rose or the Sister Ships?
The right ship depends on your dates, budget and departure airport. I’ll compare them side by side and recommend the best option for you.
Riviera vs Saga on the Douro
Saga is the other company British travellers most often compare with Riviera on the Douro. Both follow very similar routes, so the differences come down to what’s included and how you get to the airport.
| Riviera | Saga | |
|---|---|---|
| Regional UK flights | Yes – wide choice | More limited – mainly London |
| Door-to-door car service | Available as an extra | Included |
| Drinks | Free drinks package on 2026/27 bookings | All-inclusive bar drinks |
| Gratuities | Check at booking | Included |
| Travel insurance | Not included | Included (can be removed) |
| Single cabins | Yes, plus solo-only departures | Yes, limited |
| Excursions | Very similar: Lamego, Castelo Rodrigo, Salamanca, Mateus Palace, a quinta visit, a port cellar and Porto | |
My view: Saga suits you if door-to-door transport matters most and you’re over 50 (Saga’s age requirement). Riviera often wins on flexibility of departure airport, newer ships and value, and it welcomes all adult ages. Prices change constantly, so it’s always worth comparing the two for your exact dates.
Is a Riviera Douro Cruise Right for You?
Great choice if you:
- Want flights from your local airport and everything organised
- Love scenery, wine and good food
- Are travelling solo and want a dedicated single cabin
- Like the idea of a newer ship (Riviera Rose)
Think carefully if you:
- Have limited mobility – the Douro is steep and many excursions involve hills and cobbles
- Dislike long coach journeys – the Salamanca day is a long one
