Are you looking for somewhere that’s nice and warm to holiday in January – comfortable and nice without being burning hot?
Here are my top picks for destinations to consider.
I’ve chosen places where the temperature is within the 20-25 degree range across most of the country, rather than choosing one small area or region.
I’ve also chosen places where the hours of sunshine are relatively high and the amount of rainfall is little or low.

Where is it Warm in January?
Which Country Is Warm in January?
If you like it warm, but not too hot, then Chile, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Cape Verde are potentially great options for January with temperatures from 25 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius

Where is it Warm in January?
Cape Verde
Cape Verde are 10 volcanic islands set off the West Coast of Africa.
They have consistent year round temperatures of around 26-30 degrees.
The islands are an interesting mix of Portueguse and Creole influences.
The islands sit in the Atlantic Ocean directly west from Dakar in Senegal. Their slightly more exposed located means they can get more of the winds than the Canary Islands for example.
This can make travelling by ferry quite difficult – one of the ferries is called the ‘vomit express’ because of how choppy the journey is.
Travelling between the islands is not as structured and easy as in the Canaries. Ferry times are not necessarily fixed. While there are flight options these are a bit more limited.
Here they are in order of size from largest to smallest;
Santiago
This is the largest island and home to Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.
It’s also the hub for the transport links and has a population of 230,000 people.
There are lots of lovely sandy beaches to enjoy on Santiago.
Check out accommodation on Cape Verde below;
Sao Vicente
With a population of 67,000 Sao Vicente is described as the ‘cultural hub’ of Cape Verde.
Along with the culture there are also beautiful forests and sandy beaches to enjoy as well.
Check out accommodation on Sao Vicente on the map below;
Santo Antao
This island is home to 47,000 people. It’s rugged, hilly and dramatic terrain make it popular with hillwalkers.
Fogo
This island is dominated by Pico do Fogo standing at 2829m. The landscape is volcanic too. It’s home to 37,000 people.
Sal
This is the most popular island with tourists. It’s name comes from the salt that was harvested here.
Santa Maria is the main resort. Sal has wonderful sandy beaches and a population of 15,000 people.
Maio
This island is home to 6,500 people and much less visited than the other islands, giving it an undiscovered feel.
Santa Luzia
This is the smallest island in Cape Verde and is uninhabited, but you can visit it to enjoy the stunning scenery.
You can fly direct to Cape Verde from following UK airports;

Where is it Warm in January?
Chile
Whilst the Northern part of Chile is in the high 20s and low 30s the Southern part is generally in the low to mid 20 degree range in January.
That said there have been some reports of more changeable weather in the month more recently.
The scenery in the Lake District has been likened to Switzerland, with mountains, snow-capped peaks and of course lakes as well.
Puerto Montt is the capital of the Lake District in Chile and as a result a popular spot with visitors. It has a population of 250,000 people.
It’s also the gateway to the Chiloe Archipelago and Chiloe Island too, making it ideal if you want to explore the islands.
It’s the main transport hub for the area so there are plenty of transport connections, and El Epual Airport is in the city too.
Pucon is another popular spot. It’s a little further North so temperatures will be in the higher part of the range during January.
Pucon is popular with adventure activity seekers with lots of options for adrenaline-boosting things to do in the area.
There is also plenty of nature and wildlife nearby including several national parks.
Also close by are spas and natural springs.
Pucon has a population of 23,000 so it’s small and easy to explore.

Many US travellers migrate down to this area for the winter months so they can enjoy the warmer weather – they are affectionately known as ‘snowbirds’.
Miami is a well developed tourist destination and as a result there are plenty of things to keep you busy and entertained.
Miami beach is famed for it’s white sand and crystal clear water so it’s a real hotspot for visitors, but there is more to Maimi than beaches.
There are art districts, a Cuban district, national parks and marinas to enjoy as well.
The everglades are nearby and of course there is the stunning Florida Keys to enjoy.

The Bahamas
January is high season in The Bahamas, and for good reason!
There is a large mardi gras festival in the The Bahamas – the Junkanoo Winter Festival.
The beaches are a key attraction for many visitors to the Bahamas, so these are likely to be busy. The water is warm enough for swimming, snorkelling and diving.
If you want to avoid the crowds then it might be worth planning to stay on one of the more remote and less visited islands.
Another option for visiting is to take a cruise from Miami – it’s also a 1 hour flight from Miami to the Bahamas. Why not combine to the two and have a longer January stay?
Nassau is one of the most popular places to stay in the Bahamas but why not consider some of the smaller remote islands such as Acklin or the Exuma Islands.
