Things To Do In Invergordon

Is Invergordon Worth Visiting for a Day?

Depending on your interests Invergordon is worth visiting and half a day is probably ideal. That gives time to visit the museum, the local shops and walk the mural trail. Combine with a visit to Alness or the Seabord villages of Balintore and Shandwick.

Invergordon Museum

Invergordon Museum is a locally run volunteer-led museum that is open from March to October each year.

It’s open every day there is a cruise ship visiting.

It’s free to visit and a short walk from the cruise terminal in Invergordon.

It has an interesting collection of exhibits that cover the cultural history of Invergordon, notable people, and also the military and naval history.

They often have craft stalls in the museum when cruise liners visit, as well as refreshments for sale.

Don’t forget to check out their books for sale too.

If you are interested in military history then the books on Invergordon during the First and Second World Wars are great.

There is also a fantastic book on the Northern Barrage – a US operation to lay mines across the North Sea. There is an unexploded mine at the front of the museum.

While you are at the museum check out one of the murals which is on the side of the building facing the sea. It tells several stories of Invergordon’s history.

Invergordon Off the Wall Mural Trail

There is a lovely trail of murals to discover around Invergordon.

They were all commissioned by a community organisation called Invergordon Off the Wall.

All the murals were co-created with the community and relate to the history and culture of Invergordon.

My favourite one covers the railway station in Invergordon. It’s a very poignant and moving story of a Highland regiment that got left behind in France, leading to them spending years as prisoners of war.

There is also an app that allows you to add yourself to some of the murals for a great souvenir photo for your visit.

Check out their website, download the app, and follow the trail around Invergordon.

Saltburn Woodland Walk

The Saltburn Woodland Walk is a community project, set up by two incredibly dedicated locals.

It’s a small woodland area with walking paths that is very popular with locals.

There are benches at various points throughout the woods to stop and pause for a moment.

There are also little fairy doors and other additions through the woodlands which make them fun to visit.

If you are missing your doggies when travelling you are sure to meet some here!

Natal Gardens

Just across from the cruise terminal is a small community garden – Natal Gardens.

The garden was commissioned to remember a naval incident – the sinking of HMS Natal in Cromarty during the First World War.

The gardens have a water feature, pretty planting, and a central grassed area.

There is sometimes a market and craft fair in the gardens.

There are benches if you want to enjoy sitting outside for a while – yes we do have sun in Invergordon!

A more recent addition is the series of stones painted by local school children during lockdown.

Invergordon Shore Road Beach and Walk

If you turn left when you exit Invergordon cruise terminal you will find a pavement.

If you keep walking you will come to a grassed area along the edge of the shore.

There is a small sandy beach here.

Along the grassed area are a few picnic benches.

This is a good spot for a bit of bird watching – herons and common terms can often be found here.

If you want a longer walk you can follow the footpath/pavement to the neighbouring town of Alness.

You will come to Dalmore Farm on the way which has a cafe, shop, and small animal farm.

It’s a 3-mile walk from Invergordon cruise terminal to Dalmore Farm.

The footpath/pavement does follow along the main road initially but then moves inland a little bit.

Invergordon Golf Club

Invergordon Golf Club is located towards the edge of the town with fine views across the Cromarty Firth.

It’s a 9-hole course, with a 18 short hole course for juniors.

There is also a clubhouse with a bar area that serves refreshments.

The Polish War Memorial

Located at the opposite end of Invergordon from the cruise ship terminal is the Polish War Memorial.

This is one of around 20 or so memorials to Polish soldiers in the UK.

Each year there is a remembrance service.

The memorial was built by soldiers who were part of the 25th Battalion Signal Corps who were based here during the Second World War.

Visit Invergordon Lifeboat Station

Located next to the Invergordon Cruise terminal is Invergordon Lifeboat Station.

The lifeboat service is part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which is operated and funded by volunteers.

The lifeboat station does run tours for visitors, which are free but do need to be booked in advance (just to ensure there are volunteers to welcome you).

You can learn more about the history of this wonderful organisation and hear more about its work in Invergordon.

There is also some lovely merchandise on sale which make for unique gifts from the area.

2024 marks the 200th anniversary of saving lives at sea so there should be some events happening as well.

Each year the lifeboat also holds a station open day which is open to anyone.

(Full disclosure – I am just training to be one of the tour guides for the lifeboat station so hope to be able to welcome you on a visit)
